| Abstrakt: | The direction in which maritime history ought to go remains a somewhat contentious topic. Equally contentious is the issue of how best to proceed. One potential avenue is closer cooperation with world and global historians. This essay examines the possibilities and pitfalls of such collaboration, concluding that in thinking about the future maritime historians should be careful not to lose the approaches that have made their discipline unique.
