The content and presentation of patient records are often crucial factors when a general practitioner faces a complaint. But it is not only the records themselves that can cause problems for doctors. Even flawless records can land a doctor in trouble if they are not used correctly. Confidentiality is central to the trust that patients place in their doctor, so it is essential that all medical records are kept secure, with access restricted to those who need it. The Data Protection Act does not allow a doctor to confirm whether someone is on their list without the patient's consent, so even leaving records in such a way that patient names can be seen is potentially a breach of confidentiality. |
