Abstrakt: The perceived lack of interest in feminism among "millennials" is a subject of continued debate in sociological literature as well as public discourse. While the U.S. women's movement of the 1960s and 70s can claim some success in reducing educational and professional barriers, legalizing abortion, and transforming conceptions of sex/gender both in academia and in the wider culture, numerous obstacles to gender equality remain. One such obstacle millennials face is the challenge of combining work and family in a society that lacks adequate structural supports, such as paid family leave. This paper speaks to that challenge by studying college students' attitudes with regard to: (a) gender roles, (b) professional and family goals, and (c) feminism as an ideology. Drawing on 2010-2014 survey data of apx. 650 undergraduates at four U.S. universities and 60 in-depth interviews with students from this sample, I investigate how college students interpret feminist ideology and apply it toward their professional and family goals.
