Abstrakt: This paper considers the religious practices, interpretations of faith, and the lived experiences of second-generation Muslims by analyzing the extent to which they are facing bridges or barriers to inclusion and how they frame what it means to live a "good" Muslim life, given the extent of post-9/11 backlash. Analyses are based on 59 in-depth telephone surveys of congregants of two affluent South Asian mosques in suburban Metropolitan Detroit. Utilizing this data, I argue that the second generation's varied experiences are evidence that this group is facing both bridges and barriers to inclusion into mainstream American society and is redefining the meaning of religiosity to fit within frames of living a "good" Muslim life; furthermore, this redefinition by the second-generation adults in the study may be interpreted as a way to transcend America's racial hierarchy and to bridge into America's wider immigrant culture.
