Abstrakt: The growth of online social networks (OSNs) has revolutionized the way social relationships and businesses are conducted, with dynamic functionalities to connect with friends and family as well as meeting new customers. There has also been a rapid increase in the success of malicious attacks targeting users of OSNs. Malware attackers always find a way to bypass automated security measures to employ social engineering techniques in tricking users to download malware on their computer systems. In this paper, we explore the technology threat avoidance theory (TTAT) for the avoidance of malware threats. We identify potential drawbacks of this model in the context of its application for online social networking, and we propose a malware threat avoidance theory (MTAT) that will help to persuade users to avoid social-engineering-based malware attacks carried out through online social networks.
