This paper examines the effect of obstetrician advice on the feeding practices of different Jewish groups in Jerusalem. The advice of the obstetrician during the post-partum examination was significantly associated with increased duration of breast feeding of the upper and middle class women. Very few lower social class women declared receiving advice, but among the upper and middle class ones, those who declared receiving advice breast fed longer than those who did not. Minimal expressions of interest by physicians, simply inquiring whether the woman is breast feeding, can make a difference. Even mention of the topic of breast feeding has an informative and supportive effect among some segments of the population. This can be explained in view of the high prestige and status of the specialist within the population and the strong influence he or she can exert as a result of it. The woman will pay more attention to the informational content of the specialist's message than if it came from someone with lower status. It is concluded that there is a strong relationship between discussion of breast feeding with the obstetrician and breast feeding practices among higher social class women. Among lower social class women, the discussion of breast feeding is not related to longer duration of breast feeding practices. |
