Abstrakt: Same-sex couples in Canada moved one step closer on July 12, 2002 to gaining the legal right to marry, though opponents are expected to appeal a unanimous ruling on the subject by the Ontario Superior Court. "We've had many court decisions advance lesbian and gay equality," said Douglas Elliott, a lawyer for Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, a plaintiff involved in the case. "But this is the first time a Canadian court has ruled in favor of same-sex marriage," he added. Justice Harry LaForme, a member of the three-member judicial panel that issued the ruling, wrote that the restriction against same-sex marriage is an offense to the dignity of lesbians and gay men because it limits the range of relationship options available to them.
