Abstrakt: We examine how 1343 students in grades 5 to 9 solved an arithmetic problem and attempted to provide a general representation for a function described in the problem. We found that use of letters appears from grade 5 and continuously increases through grade 9 and that students who solved the arithmetic part of the problem were more likely to use letters as variables.
