Telework is an important institution for the productivity of modern economies not only in microeconomic but also in macroeconomic terms. Its spread and growth depends on technological developments with a focus on the developments of telework support services, as well as on the several barriers that exist at employee, company and society level. Even though technological developments made in the last years are impressive, there are still plenty of barriers that need to be eliminated. The aim of this essay is to note down these barriers and examine whether technological developments (support services) are in position to counterbalance the various barriers that impede the spread of telework.
