Introduction: The prevention of traffic accidents is a major social issue around the world. Recent figures related to traffic accidents must be ascertained, and effective measures to prevent them must be formulated in order to address this issue. Materials and Methods: The current study examined the number of road traffic accidents and fatalities in Russia, Japan, the UK, and Italy in 2000, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. This study used 2000 as a baseline to calculate the ratio of traffic accidents and fatalities during the subsequent years 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. Results: Results indicated that the number of traffic accidents and fatalities decreased in 3 of the 4 countries studied (Japan, UK, and Italy) during the study period (excluding the 2005/2000 ratio of traffic accidents and fatalities in Japan). However, traffic accidents and fatalities increased in Russia. Conclusion: Our results thus suggest that Russia needs to promptly consider implementing measures to prevent traffic accidents. In Russia, agencies involved in preventing traffic accidents (including road traffic accidents) and the public should be made aware of the results of this study. The Russian government then needs to promptly consider implementing effective measures to prevent road traffic accidents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
