This article discusses research on some of the complexities of the concept of "place," with specific reference to the Artisan Economy of Portland, Oregon. Topics discussed include the reliance of Portland's artisan economy on a resurgence of place specificity primarily expressed and exported to a global audience in the notion of "Portland Made," how Portland makers use the image-based service Instagram as coping mechanism, and the relationship between subjectivity, place, and Instagram. |
