Abstrakt: This study explores the relationship between gender and ethos through a rhetorical analysis of a case study focused on Nebraska anti-suffragists' 1918 defense testimony. Nebraska suffragists alleged that anti-suffragists waged a fraudulent petition campaign and this study analyzes the defense testimony of four primary witnesses. These witnesses attempted to maintain their character while defending their participation in the petition work. The study argues that these traditional women, by appealing in their testimony to conventional and patriarchal ideals of womanhood, ultimately undermined their own character. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
