While standards for teaching in the United States are increasing, perceptions of the education profession are decreasing. The public is inundated with negative images of American education, and prestige for teaching is declining. At the same time, legislative changes to educational standards place unprecedented demands on teachers. The University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University are working together to recruit high achieving students to secondary English and secondary math education programs at both Mississippi colleges. The Mississippi Excellence in Teaching Program (METP) scholarship is a unique scholarship opportunity designed to bring high performing rising college freshmen to Schools of Education.
