This paper compares the development of the osteopathic profession in Britain to that of the United States. Focusing on the concepts exclusion and cooptation, this paper analyzes why the osteopathic physician in the United States has risen to equal status with the allopathic physician while being the equivalent (or less) of a chiropractor in Britain. Implications for using a power approach for explaining the professionalization process are also presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
