The American education system socializes in the areas of instilling discipline and obedience. Political socialization may also occur in higher education. Two models must be employed to understand student attitudes toward the creation science law. First, in the absence of any generally available public information concerning the issue, we find that year in school is the most powerful predictor. Students with more time in college show more negative attitudes toward the creation science law. Grade point average and sex are also related to a less extent. Second, when information concerning the law is generally available, the explanatory model changes, and college of major academic commitment becomes more important. Year in school is still related to student attitudes but the relation becomes tempered by the differential acceptance of evidence and the differential ability to evaluate the evidence. |
