• School administrators play a significant role in the hiring, support, and evaluation of special educators. • Many school administrators have little pre- or in-service training on special educator classroom roles or special education evidence-based practices. • We examine the types of special educator skills and knowledge five elementary school administrators value and how these identified skills and knowledge align with the Council for Exceptional Children Initial Preparation Standards. • Administrators focus heavily on teacher dispositions that mitigate professional conflict and are heavily influenced by high-stakes student achievement testing.
