Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz (pronounced "AG-uh-see") was born in Môtier-en-Vuly, Switzerland, in 1807. His father was a Protestant pastor, and, while Agassiz would never identify with any sectarian religious persuasion, his scientific studies were infused with an idealistic romanticism that attributed the wonders of the natural world to the power of a benevolent Creator. Agassiz attended the Medical School of Zurich and the Universities of Heidelberg and Munich. He earned his doctorate in philosophy in 1829 and his medical degree in 1830. After publishing a monograph on the fishes of Brazil, Agassiz came to the attention of Baron Georges Cuvier. After two years of study under Cuvier, Agassiz accepted a professorship at the College of Neuchâtel. INSET: Louis Agassiz. |
