Abstrakt: A literary criticism of the Neville St. Clair character in the short story "The Man with the Twisted Lip" by Arthur Conan Doyle is presented. Topics included are the journalist's masquerade as street beggar Hugh Boone, the anthropological and sociological premise of participant-observer research in investigative journalism, and the profits of pretended distress by professional beggars.
