This study examines global patterns in what has come to be called the 'climate justice movement.' The characteristics of 1,617 protests that were motivated partly or entirely by concerns about global warming, and were undertaken in 92 countries over a recent twelve year period, are analyzed. Key geographic, tactical, and organizational features of these protest events are then described. The paper highlights strengths and challenges facing this global social movement, and concludes with a discussion of strategies that might allow for the strengthening of climate protest actions in an era when the threat of disruptive global warming is increasing.
