Abstrakt: In light of the current historical moment with the newest global economic crisis of capitalism and the reaction of various social movements (World Social Forum, the Arab Spring, the Occupy Movements, los Indignados), this paper uses the idea of (de)colonization from a developing world context and conscientização from a Latin American context in order to contribute to the creation of a critical pedagogy of class consciousness and the necessary dismantling of a global capitalist system whose ideology in relation to the state and hegemony affects us all. Using the idea that we are all colonized subjects of the capitalist system and as such often unknowingly espouse bourgeois ideologies, this paper embraces the idea that through a praxis of education and struggle we can denounce the bourgeois in favor of building new ideologies of a more democratic and egalitarian nature for the construction of another world. Using a historical materialist framework, the political and theoretical writings of Albert Memmi, Amilcar Cabral, and Paulo Freire will be examined as a means to elaborate a critical pedagogy, theory and praxis.
