Abstrakt: | This study revisits the hypothesis that the contextual sex ratio at sexual maturity is related to individual longevity or mortality risks. Previous empirical studies in the United States and Sweden have shown inconsistent results. I use household registration data from pre-industrial Northeast China and calculate the sex ratio at the village level with men aged 17-26 and women aged 15-24. By applying event-history analysis, preliminary results show that a higher proportion of sexually mature males was associated with a higher relative risk of male mortality in adulthood and older ages. This effect remains significant after controlling for household fixed effects and individual marriage outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
