Abstrakt: This paper examines the expansion of the real estate sector in India to highlight the social process of commensuration which structures this sector as a market that is attractive to foreign direct investment. We argue that commensuration, consisting of a social process by which dissimilar objects are rendered comparable or understood by a common measure, is an important manner in which real estate markets in emerging markets are made amenable to foreign investment. We suggest that such a process involves heterogeneous group of actors including the state, foreign investors, developers and real estate agencies. We focus specifically on two dimensions of commensuration consisting of the creation of tradable real estate portfolios containing properties and analytical discourses about potential growth in the demand of residential, retail and office real estate.
