Abstrakt: This paper sets out to investigate the linguistic and intercultural issues that arose during a ten-week study abroad programme for Japanese students while staying with homestay families in Auckland, New Zealand. The students had limited English language proficiency and many found the initial experience of using English language quite challenging in the authentic and unmodified context of a homestay family. The importance of intercultural influences in the verbal discourse between students and their host families also became evident. Many students noted the strengthening relationship with their homestay families, particularly evident when the students used non-verbal communication strategies and showed a willingness to participate in family activities. Relationships also improved when host family members exhibited personal warmth and kindness through their positive and flexible attitudes and were prepared to modify their own speech and involve their students in continuing dialogue. Consideration is also given in this paper to issues of programme management and student support and the importance of pre-departure training in preparing the students for the linguistic and cultural challenges of their study abroad program.
