This article presents an analysis of the results of the 2009 South African national election and the potential implications of these results for the next round of elections in 2011 (local government) and 2014 (national and provincial). The analysis tracks the changes in the performance of the main political parties, and links the parties' 2009 performance to voter registration and turnout, as well as the changing demographic profiles of the parties' voter support. This reveals important trends in the alignment of South African voters. It is these trends that would have to be either nurtured or arrested, should political parties hope to steer Election 2014 in amplified or opposing directions. Regression analysis on voting district data is employed to find the key determinants of results in the 2009 elections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
