The author reflects on the under-representation of female characters in writings of British author Arthur Conan Doyle, in context of the Doyle's claim of detective story as "masculine novel." Topics discussed include Ettie Shafter, a female character in Doyle's one of the Sherlock Holmes short stories "The Valley of the Fear," how female detective or criminal is viewed as a threat to masculine novel, and Irene Adler, a fictional character in the Sherlock Holmes stories written by Doyle. |
