This article presents an overview of the Healthy Steps forYoung Children (Healthy Steps) program at Montefiore Medical Center, in the Bronx, NY.The authors review the theoretical underpinnings of this national program forthe promotion of early childhood mental health. The Healthy Steps program at Montefiore is integrated into outpatient pediatric primary care clinics within the poorest congressional district in the nation. We describe Healthy Steps sessions with families during the newborn, 18-month, and 36-month pediatric well-child visits. Each clinical vignette offers a glimpse of how Healthy Steps specialists assess families at greatest psychosocial risk, and of the interventions used to support the development of secure attachment and interrupt the intergenerational transmission of trauma.
