Abstrakt: Background -- Tobacco smoking is a recognized as a risk factor for the development of periodontal disease. Aim and objective -- The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of various treatment modalities in reducing the levels of nicotine from the root surfaces. Materials and methods -- 15 periodontally involved extracted teeth were taken from 15 smoker patients. The roots were sectioned longitudinally and 10 root halves were root planed with ultrasonic scaler (group A), 10 halves were treated with Er: YAG laser (group B) and 10 halves were left untreated (control group). Each root half was subjected to methylene chloride and quantified using high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Statistical analysis -- Nicotine concentrations were compared between the three groups using paired t-test and wilcoxon test. Results -- A statistically significant reduction in the nicotine concentration was seen in both laser treated sections and root planed sections. Conclusion -- Nicotine is present on the periodontally involved root surfaces of smoker patients. Its concentration can be significantly reduced by both root planing and treatment with Er: YAG laser. Hence Er: YAG laser treatment can be used as an alternative to the standard treatment approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
