Using a family systems model and a qualitative research approach, the transcripts of interviews of mothers of low birth weight preterm infants were analyzed to provide dietitians with valuable insights into the decision making practices of families. Analysis of the interviews showed that concerns about the nutritional care of their infants influenced the mothers' perceptions of medical care in the infants' first year of life. Families identified a need for more information regarding the nutritional care of their preterm infants, particularly following discharge from the hospital.
