Abstrakt: Athletes seek out advice from sports nutrition professionals for finding ways to improve overall athletic performance. Standard information provided to athletes can include advice on weight management and body composition, timing of eating for both training and competition, role of fluids as well as types of fluids ideal for prevention of dehydration, and supplements. Along with an appropriate nutrition assessment, the expanding role of the sports nutritionist should include efforts to document the relationship between any nutrition intervention and behaviors that could also influence positive performance outcomes. For example, interventions focusing on fluid intake should be followed up by determining how athletes are using water bottles or fluid intake logs. As athletes adhere to nutrition advice there appears to be a greater opportunity for improvement in performance. Although many variables must be factored into athletic success, strides in documenting the effectiveness of nutrition counseling has merit. Any effort to link nutrition behaviors with a sports nutrition intervention will lead athletic administrators to fully understand better the role nutrition can play in optimizing performance and possibly promote growth of sports nutrition positions at the collegiate level.
