Interest in total ankle arthroplasty is increasing and it is becoming an attractive alternative to arthrodesis in selected patients with advanced degenerative disease.1 Ankle arthritis can be bilateral at the time of presentation. In these patients, the standard approach is to stage replacements. We describe the outcome of simultaneous bilateral total ankle replacement in five patients. This is the first reported series of this approach. There are no documented guidelines for rehabilitation following simultaneous bilateral ankle arthroplasty. Our postoperative regime has yielded satisfactory results with our patients suffering no major complications. They achieved postoperative relief of pain and good function, as well as excellent satisfaction relating to their experience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
