Abstrakt: Technology provides instructors with the opportunity to engage students both with the content of the course as well as with other students in a wide variety of ways. Instructional technologies are used at all levels of education-from preschool classrooms to doctoral programs-and across all content disciplines to enhance traditional classroom experiences and to replace face-to-face settings to support online education. Although online teaching and learning dissolves educational boundaries by providing "anywhere and anytime" education, it also presents a challenge for online educators who must learn and apply new instructional paradigms to support high-quality educational experiences "that students can embrace and educators can sustain" (Dykman & Davis, 2008a, p. 11). To that end, this chapter provides a toolkit of strategies to help online instructors plan effective instructional design, select delivery options, create strong learning communities, and assess student learning.
