According to a report by the European Commission (EC), now the European Union (EU) there is over 11,000 national technical rules and safety. European Railway Agency (ERA) currently has regulatory responsibility with the task of drawing up minimum standards for interoperability in order to reduce the multitude of national rules and to allow the safe and uninterrupted movement of trains. The European Union should contribute to the establishment and development of trans-European networks in transport. To achieve these objectives, the EU must take all measures necessary to ensure the interoperability of networks, especially in the field of technical standardization. Aiming for the interoperability of the rail system within the EU should lead to the definition of an optimal level of technical harmonization and would promote, improve and develop international rail transport services within the European Union and third countries, and to contribute to the establishment the internal market in equipment and services for revitalization, modernization and operation of the rail system within the Union. The paper aims to present some relevant aspects of the introduction of European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and Global System for Mobile Communications - Railway (GSM-R) standards in the European railways.
