The article discusses the anti-inflammatory effect of cortico-steroids on diabetic macular edema (DME) which is associated with loss of endothelial tight junction proteins and increased levels of VEFG production. Topics discussed include evidence that steroids may have a neuroprotective effect on the retina, the successful use of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) injection for treating DME reported by JB Jonas and A. Sofker and efficacy of intravitreal steroids in treating DME. |
