Service learning, sometimes referred to as civic engagement or engaged scholarship, is one of today's most widely discussed topics within higher education. In human services, it provides students with the opportunity to further their knowledge beyond the classroom by engaging with their community in a wide range of mutually beneficial ways. This article reviews service learning as an experiential construct and details its relevance to human service education in particular. The authors provide a detailed example of a service learning initiative at the University of Tennessee, which pairs student mentors with grieving children throughout the community. Included in the program overview are descriptions of the project's multiple beneficiaries, as well as challenges faced by program coordinators. Implications are provided for human service educators considering the incorporation of a service learning element into existing curriculum models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
