Brief Background: HIV is associated with varied oral and gingivo-periodontal manifestations caused by the loss of immune functions, due to CD4+Tcell depletion. Objectives: To assess and compare the prevalence of oral and gingivoperiodontal diseases in HIV+ve patients. Materials and Methods: 50 diagnosed HIV infected subjects were enrolled in the study. The immune-status of the patients was assessed from their CD4 cell count status and was correlated with the presence of oral and gingivo-periodontal lesions. Results: The prevalence of any pathological oral manifestations other than periodontal conditions in the study group was 28%. Severe and very severe forms of gingivo-periodontal lesions comprised of 46% of the total cases. There was considerable association between the lesion severity and CD4 cell depletion. Descriptive statistical analysis showed CD4 cell count was inversely proportional to the severity of the disease. Summary and Conclusions: The advanced or severe forms of periodontal disease can act as a rough guide to the level of CD4 count in HIV positive patients with severe depletion of CD4 cell count. The presence of only LGE in patients who have maintained good oral hygiene reinforces the importance of oral hygiene maintenance in such infected individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
