Abstrakt: Brief Background: The paper presented deals with various tumour markers which are implicated in oral cancer and their increasing importance as a diagnostic modality in oral cancer detection. Materials and Methods: Multiple facets of the field of tumour markers have been reviewed by consulting the vast amount of literature available from texts and articles. Discussion: Discussion focuses on the ever looming threat of oral cancer, various current modalities for its detection, various tumour markers, and their role in oral neoplasia, brief history, classification, ideal characteristics and uses. Summary and Conclusions: Fast emerging technologies in molecular biology have enabled the discovery of newer molecular markers for oral cancer diagnosis and surveillance. About 50 potential tumour markers have been discussed in this article with an aim to apprise the dentist about this continuously expanding domain. While biopsy remains the gold standard of diagnostic tests for oral cancer detection, tumour markers can take the onus for augmenting the case detection, prognostic indication for disease progression, recurrence and patient survival as well as effectiveness of treatment and responses to therapy.
