The article presents an analysis of the problem of futility in the U.S. medical community. Topics covered include the important categories of medical decisions, and examples of cases that illustrate the need to balance the legitimate perspectives of patients and physicians on the appropriate treatment including one on the continuation of mechanical ventilation in terminally ill patients and one on the use of extracorporeal life support. |
