Abstrakt: The article discusses the Hudson River School painters including Thomas Cole, William Bartlett, and John Ferguson Weir, focusing on their depictions of ruins throughout the Valley during the 19th century. Other topics include depictions of man-made and natural ruins in art, the different meanings ascribed to ruins including patriotism, a connection to European architectural heritage, and cultural pessimism, and the creation of artificial ruins.
