Let ${\rm F}$ be a non-Archimedean locally compact field of residue characteristic $p$, let ${\rm D}$ be a finite-dimensional central division ${\rm F}$-algebra and let $\ell$ be a prime number different from $p$. We develop a theory of $\ell$-modular types for the group ${\rm GL}_m({\rm D})$, $m\geqslant 1$, in preparation of the study of the $\ell$-modular smooth representations of this group.
