Abstrakt: An essay is presented relating the image of fire common to both Marie-Elena John's "Unburnable" and Jean Rhys' "Wide Sargasso Sea." It discusses fire's symbolic and survival purposes for Caribbean women to reconcile with their colonial patriarchal past. It also mentions the soucouyant as an evil spirit in old woman's clothing in Trinidadian writer Elizabeth Nuñez's novel "When Rocks Dance."
