Abstrakt: Eighteen naturally infected transmissible venereal tumour (TVT) dogs (both sexes) aged approximately 2 years with mean body weight of 11.15 ± 3.8 kg were used for the study. They were assigned into three groups as follows: group A, surgery; group B, vincristine sulphate; and group C, levamisole and Bacille Calmette Guerin (bcg) vaccine treatments. The clinical behaviour of surgical chemotherapy treatments of the lesions such as blood loss, regression and recurrence rates was monitored for a period of 28 weeks. Other parameters like the heart and respiratory rates, rectal temperature, body weight as well as the level of food and water consumption were monitored. Data collected were statistically analysed using ANOVA and separated with Duncan's multiple range tests. Surgery and vincristine sulphate as single treatments achieved 100 % cure, with no recurrence for at least 28 weeks post-treatment. Blood loss, distortion and stricture of the vaginal vestibule and labia were some of the clinical complications observed in surgically managed group. Inappetence, watery faeces and weight loss were also obvious in vincristine sulphate treatment. Partial regression was observed between the 20th and 28th weeks on TVT lesions treated with levamisole and bcg therapy. No significant change was observed in the physiologic parameters monitored in all the groups and within each group throughout the study. It is concluded that both surgical treatment and single weekly dose of four to six times using vincristine sulphate were effective for the treatments of transmissible venereal tumour in dogs.
