The Gomal Plain, comprising presently of the two districts of southern Pakhtunkhwa i.e. Dera Ismail Khan and Tank, has been very productive in terms of cultural history and antiquity of human settlements from the food producing community of the 5th millennium BC to the colonial period. These periods have left a deep impact on the cultural history of the Gomal Plain, which have made the region significant for archaeological research to dig into the past and uncover the cultural history. Apart from other periods, the Gomal Plain also remained popular during the Muslim period since the Ghaznavids, which has however, not yet been highlighted by the researchers. Archaeological reconnaissance in the region, on the other hand, has revealed more than a hundred sites of this period, which ranges from small mounds to large cities, tombs, mosques and wells etc. (Dani, 1970-71: 2-34; Ali, 1988: 3-12; Rahman, 1997: 37-40; Shakirullah, 1998: 121-29; Ali and Khan, 2001: 173-217; Ali, Jan and Durrani, 2005: Ali and Jan, 2005: 53-4).In this paper, history and architecture of one of the mosques in the region, known as Haji Baba Mosque will be highlighted.
