The article presents a study on the leaving home process of young adults in the Netherlands. One of the reasons for the changing pattern in home leaving can be attributed to care-taking in the home. Modern youngsters are more aware of the importance of the care taking task and therefore appreciate the service provided by their mother more than youngsters in the past. Young people from religious families leave home at a later age than young people from nonreligious families. The number of people in the Netherlands who regard themselves as church members continues to decrease, but the average age of leaving home increases. Financial measures in favor of young adults in the 1960s and the early 1970s made it possible for them to leave home at an early age. The deterioration of labor market conditions and the guaranteed youth minimum wage also explains the reason of young people to leave home at a later age. The tightening housing market has a postponing effect on leaving home, especially because the provision of young people with good accommodations at home is a nationwide standard. |
