This article focuses on the interviews with 21 women in a rural Colorado county which yielded personal descriptions of isolation and the feelings and strategies that exist in response to isolating events and circumstances. Social workers and other human services professionals who attempt to address the specific needs of rural women can expect to encounter a scarcity of literature in this area. In addition to the lack of locus upon rural women, rurality is often stereotyped negatively and labeled as isolating. As students and a faculty member in a graduate social work program with a rural community emphasis, the authors chose to explore the meaning of isolation from the perspectives of rural women. In the literature, there is a lack of consensus on the condition of being isolated. Evidence of this lack of conceptual clarity is reflected in the variable, complex, multidimensional, and incomplete definitions of isolation. Generally, social isolation is framed as the response to isolation or the discrepancy between the desired level and the achieved level of affiliation. |
