This article will attempt to address two current issues, using the results of a 1995 pilot MBA language for specific purposes course in Spanish as the basis for conclusions regarding the utility for trainers to design practical screening criteria. This will increase the likelihood that a second language candidate will be motivated and, more importantly, succeed. The manager, his or her foreign language trainer, and the subsidizing corporation must all be cognizant that training for second languages is a costly endeavor; the selection process cannot be based solely on previous academic success or business acumen; practical suggestions as to how Spanish may be delivered more efficiently to that group in a shorter and more motivational format. The MBA programme under study consists principally of middle managers and 98 per cent of them study part time. Although L2 training of practicing middle managers has progressed dramatically in the past decade, there is still room for improvement. |
