Abstrakt: The article analyzes the interaction between legal responses, medical practices and public opinion about euthanasia in The Netherlands. Since the early 1970s the issue of euthanasia has been intensely debated in The Netherlands. Through these debates knowledge about medical practices involving the end of life was no longer confined to medical or legal quarters, but became public to a large extent. Cultural diversity is apparent in the case of euthanasia. For some the issue is taboo, whereas others feel it is important to discuss euthanasia's moral, medical, and legal aspects. For some euthanasia remains alien to medicine, but others see it as part of modem medical practice. Developments over the past three decades have led to a situation where Dutch doctors are able to perform euthanasia openly and report it to medical and legal authorities without fear of criminal prosecution or conviction. Dutch pluralism has always focused on the maintenance and survival of subcultural groups. Its emphasis has been on protection of minority opinions, in the face of a monopoly of power by the majority.
