This article discusses the role of the Internet and its multimedia subdivision, the World Wide Web, in exploring and understanding cultural diversity, as well as the challenges faced in designing a system for organizing and presenting information. Locating a book on the library shelves, or a file stored on desktop computers, is said to be tricky enough. To address such problem, enterprising high-tech companies have created searchable indexes, which was made available on Web sites. These indexes, the most famous of which is Yahoo, boast that they contain millions of Net addresses known as universal resource locators, or URLs. By typing in key words or selecting from a list of topics, a list of URLs will be made available. Details of the effort of the author to develop a Web index dedicated to information about Asia was given. The company creating the site is the Black Box Online Ltd., an aggressive and innovative multimedia firm based in Hong Kong. Because of its geographic location and its work with Asian companies, Black Box has a deep interest in promoting global awareness of the region, its cultures, and its people. |
