Abstrakt: | An essay on E. Jane Gay's photographs regarding the efforts of Special Indian Agent Alice C. Fletcher to allot lands to the Nez Perces in Idaho in 1890s is presented. It explores the literal and metaphorical dimensions of transit, the idea of transmotion, and the illusory and monocular perceptions of the Nez Perces. It also discusses the domesticating agendas of allotment, the persistence of Native sovereignty, and the fate of Nez Perces leaders James Reubens and Archie Lawyer. |
