The article considers Fred Simpson and Tom Longboat, the only two Indians of North America who were members of Canada's team for the 1908 Olympic Games. Simpson's obscurity as a historical figure compared to Longboat, a celebrated athlete in Canadian sports history, is discussed as an example of the process of public memory and is largely attributed to sportswriters of his time being unable to fit him into prevailing ethnic stereotypes of Indians. |
