Abstrakt: The article discusses the monetization, mobility of peasant, and the çiftlik system, as well as the local politics, in Salonika, Greece from 1740-1820. Topics include the emerging power relations in rural areas which changed the status of peasants and the city-countryside relationship, the politics of Ottoman reform movements and the political and economic transformation of the 18th century, and the debt arrangements between landholders and peasants.
